‘Point-and-shoot’ capability comes to mobiles

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Multimedia

Camera phones have become extremely popular primarily because of the convenience they offer for the user to capture images immediately without the need for a separate digital camera or a conventional camera. In the initial stages, camera phones offered very little resolution. Over time, the underlying technology in camera phones has improved to a great extent, so much so that some models of camera phones today offer a resolution comparable to that of digital cameras.

This said, not every person makes a good photographer. This is because good photography requires appropriate focus and a steady hand, which not every person possesses. Evolving camera phone technology has catered to these problems also. Now, OmniVision Technologies has made these problems passe by launching the first TrueFocus camera incorporating Wavefront Coding technology for mobile handsets. TrueFocus brings about a revolution in camera technology as it offers ‘point and shoot’ capability. This enables the whole image to be always in focus. Because of this, the user can capture any image instantly with one click.

According to OmniVision Technologies, TrueFocus allows the user to click images in real time without waiting for the lens to focus. This eliminates the possibility of missing good pictures. TrueFocus offers a product that is small in size and durable. It is easy to manufacture and is cost-effective, it claimed. The patented Wavefront Coding technology optically encodes light by making use of a special lens which in turn forms an intermediate image on a sensor. This intermediate image is then decoded with digital processing, which results in the creation of a picture that will be in focus across the whole image. The TrueFocus camera comprises a Wavefront Coded lens, a TrueFocus signal processor and a three-megapixel CMOS image sensor.

Claiming that the TrueFocus cameras are the first products that offer true point-and-shoot capability, the company said that this has been made possible as the complete image is displayed clear and sharp at any point of time irrespective of where the object to be captured is in the field of view of the camera. Because of this, there will not be any delay related to focus, it said. Another major feature is that unlike in AF cameras, there are no moving components in these cameras. Hence, they are less prone to damage in case they are dropped. The lack of any moving components also results in less power consumption and greater reliability in extremely high or low temperatures.
